Transform Your Bedroom into a Sleep Sanctuary

Category Advice

We all know how important it is to get a good night sleep. Adequate sleep plays a crucial part in leading a balanced and healthy lifestyle and makes you feel refreshed and revitalised. Similarly, the environment in which you sleep plays an equally significant role, directly affecting the quality and quantity of sleep you get. This is why your bedroom, is without a doubt, the most important room in your home.

Generally, we spend more time in the bedroom than anywhere else – therefore it is imperative that your bedroom should be as relaxing, peaceful and tranquil as possible. If your room stresses you out, instead of calming you down, then the following guide will help turn your bedroom into a soothing sleep sanctuary.

De-Clutter and Clean

The first step in transforming your room into a relaxing refuge is to get rid of everything that is lying around, cluttering your space.  This does not mean that you have to throw anything away, but the aim of decluttering your bedroom should be to create flow and white space. When your belongings are organised and stowed away from sight, your mind will feel more at ease.

Further ensure that you regularly clean your bedroom, by dusting fixtures, washing windows, sweeping floors and wiping down surfaces – this is particularly important if you have allergies as dust and dirt could affect your breathing and ultimately your sleep.

The Mattress Matters

One of the main factors, contributing to a restless night, is an uncomfortable mattress. When turning your room into a sanctuary it is a good idea to invest in a quality mattress. Before buying a mattress you have to test it out in the store. When finding the right mattress for you it should be; the right dimensions for you and your room, comfortable but still firm enough to support and offer efficient postural alignment.

Calming Colour Scheme

Different colours trigger different responses and emotions – this is why the colour you choose for your bedroom is crucial. Bright and dark colours, as well as loud patterns can be distracting and disruptive to your slumber – picking a neutral colour scheme with subdued tones will make your bedroom seem cosy and produce a relaxing effect.

Look at Lighting

Your bedroom’s lighting may not be something you have thought about, but it can really make a difference in the overall atmosphere and ambiance of the room. During the day, try to allow as much natural light in, while utilising dimmers and mood lights during the evening.  Harsh lighting can make you feel on edge and wide-awake, which will hinder your sleep – try swapping out florescent bulbs out for lower wattage lights, you can even incorporate candles and fairy lights to add a glow to the room.

Eliminate Electronics

Smartphones, televisions and other electronics have become common features in the bedroom. Many people surf the net or watch episodes of their favourite shows within the hour before they go to sleep.  While entertaining, these devices do more harm than good when it comes to a good night’s rest. The synthetic blue light that these screens emanate, promotes alertness by supressing the release of melatonin, a hormone that encourages sleep. If you ban the tech from your bedroom you boost your quality of sleep.
